哈達瑜珈是所有瑜珈類別中最常見的瑜珈,也是別最古老的的瑜珈。哈達瑜珈以極度的呼吸與身體鍛鍊為主,最初為印度教修行者為了鍛鍊堅定的意志以及增強生理機能,才瘋狂的去挑戰人體極限。古老的哈達瑜珈士的外觀特徵是穿耳環,在實行哈達瑜珈時都要斷食、閉氣、長時間單腳站立或舉手等苦行,另外還有睡釘床、吞紗布清洗食道,有時會將身體縮擠在小箱子埋入地下好幾天,但這些行為是早期進入哈達瑜珈的修行者所從事的訓練。
